About

Mission

We turn readers into leaders! Through an annual book festival connecting acclaimed authors with teenagers, we inspire young people to use the power of words and storytelling to achieve dreams, make a difference, and “be the author of your own life.”

YA by the Bay is dedicated to getting books in hands, especially in underfunded schools, and proud to offer entrance to the festival free for teens.

The Festival

YA BY THE BAY is a non-profit 501c3 literacy movement bringing young adult authors and readers together in a dynamic two-day book festival at the stunning waterfront Convention Center in Tampa, Florida.

Strategic partnerships include local independent bookstore Oxford Exchange, the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, and the Hillsborough Public School system.

This event is forged from the belief that a love of books helps build empathy, diversity, and community in the next generation, all set against the backdrop of a vibrant vacation destination.

Authors can immerse themselves in an inclusive, thriving literary community.
Students will learn directly from inspirational authors with writing workshops and discussions.

Educators get unique access to author led sessions and exposure to a variety of children’s, middle grade, and young adult authors.

Readers will meet their favorite writers through panels, author meet and greets, book signings, talks, and keynote speeches.

Dominique & Sorboni

Founder's Story

Sorboni Banerjee and Dominique Richardson are young adult authors and co-founders of YA by the Bay. As a television news anchor reporting stories that impact the community, Sorboni knows first-hand, the impact of storytelling as a connecting force. Reading YA was quite literally Dominique’s lifeline when the magic of compelling stories helped her overcome her battle with depression. They both believe whole-heartedly in the restorative, inspirational power of books.

At a conference together, they noted a missing piece. Sure, it was exciting having authors there to meet their fans… but what if there was a way to teach kids how to use the messages from these talented writers as motivation for what is possible? What if there was a way to take a YA conference to the next level by using it to teach leadership?

Seated separately on the plane on the way back, they each texted each other the same exact thing before phones went off for the flight. We should host a conference! In TAMPA! And then had to sit alone with the exciting thought going off like fireworks for three hours.

YA by the Bay was born, from a desire to make sure authors’ words reach the kids who need them. To make sure students realize, knowing how to craft a story, helps you craft the story of your life. To make sure everyone feels welcome, included, and heard. To make sure everyone knows—your voice matters.
